What are the anxiety symptoms in men: how do you recognise them?

Men face many stressful issues in their life.  Most men were raised to believe that they have to be successful in whatever they do.  They must provide for their family, they must be a good husband to their wife, and a great father to their children.  In today’s tough economic times, the competition is worse than ever, and next to impossible to get away from.

Anxiety is something that everyone deals with in their lives, on a daily basis.  In general, we have all found our own ways of coping with the anxiety that the world throws at us.  It is when the anxiety that is coming at us overpowers our normal coping mechanism that the problems begin.

Why might anxiety symptoms in men be worse than for women?

For women, their coping mechanism may be much better suited to cope with anxiety than is men’s.  Women tend to have a close group of good friends with whom they can, will and DO talk.  Men, on the other hand, have been raised to:  “Suck it up!”, and even when surrounded with their closest buddies won’t spill the beans and talk out their problems.  For some reason they believe that it would be a sign of weakness, and therefore:  “Unmanly”.  So they believe that they will eventually overcome all of their problems if they just keep doing what they are already doing, and fail to seek help, hiding their problems and concerns and feelings from everybody else.

This means that the anxiety symptoms in men and the pressure can continue to build, up to the problem point:  the point where it starts affecting your lifestyle.  The overload of anxiety, when it reaches breaking point, can lead to something called Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), which is the cause of worrying everyday about one’s problems, which a month or a year before would not have been a subject of worry.   Worry starts to consume their every waking hour, leaving room for fewer and fewer “calm” thoughts.  This brings on a perfect storm of more and more anxiety and negative emotions.  This, of course makes it even harder to concentrate and do well at work, or even at home, which causes even more anxiety.

So if you are a guy that is trying to find out if the feelings and physical signs you are feeling and seeing are an actual problem, or if you are the friend or loved one that is concerned about someone you know, what are some of the anxiety symptoms in men?



Some of the anxiety symptoms in men:

1.)  Low energy.  Stress and worry are sucking all of the energy.
2.)  Increasing alcohol consumption.  Self-medicating might work at the beginning, but it will turn into a crutch, and more and more will be needed to provide that temporary relief they are seeking.
3.)  Increasing drug use.  Same reason.
4.)  Insomnia.  This can vary from almost the inability to sleep, to not sleeping long enough.  Worry has taken over the mind, and sleep is a difficult thing to do.
5.)  A feeling of helplessness.  Not sure what to do, and everything that used to work isn’t working any more.
6.)  Loss of appetite.  You might not notice him not eating, but you might very well notice his loss of weight.
7.)  On edge all of the time, may be extremely irritable.  You may find that a once easy going guy bites your head off for no reason.
8.)  Feelings of worthlessness.  This goes back to how he was raised, and now he’s feeling like he can’t live up to his own expectations.
9.)  Looks, and is very tense.  You might notice that his muscles are always tense, or that he is grinding his teeth, or you may see his jaw muscles working all of the time, or his fists clenching or unclenching.
10.)  More headaches then are normal.
11.)  Complaints of nausea, indigestion, and/or diarrhea…….these are all from the anxiety: it promotes the fight or flight response and the gut just doesn’t work well during these times.
12.)  Getting away from lifelong routines.  This may mean a runner that stops running, a bowler that stops bowling, not bathing, not shaving, and not dressing as well as usual.
13.)  Lack of a normal sex drive.
14.)  Physical signs such as heart palpitations, heavy perspiration, trembling.

Since anxiety symptoms in men, if left un-coped with and untreated is mentally destructive, and physically taxing, it is important to seek some help.  If you are the friend or loved one of someone you believe is having problems, then you need to start steering them towards getting treatment.
